Abstract:

Target detection is one of major tasks of hyperspectral remote sensing. A hyperspectral image cube contains hundreds of spectral bands, and its high spectral resolution can help detect targets with subtle differences from background. However, its large data dimension leads to a high computation burden. Thus, it is necessary to conduct dimensional reduction on the original data for efficient analysis. Band selection is to select a subset of bands while still generating satisfactory results using the selected bands. Most band selection algorithms in the literature are focused on classification problems, and few has been proposed for target detection. It is more difficult to separate targets and non-targets with selected bands due to lack of training samples for target and background modeling. We develop an efficient band selection algorithm by proposing a metric that can accurately gauge target-background-separation. The search strategy is also an important issue. To avoid exhaustive search, which is computationally prohibitive to hyperspectral band selection, particle swarm optimization with global searching capability is employed. The developed approach can select a small band subset while yielding similar or even better detection performance than using all the original bands.


Brief Introduction of Prof. Du Qian :

Dr. Du is Bobby Shackouls Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mississippi State University, USA. Her research interests include hyperspectral remote sensing image analysis and applications, pattern recognition, and machine learning. Dr. Du is a Fellow of SPIE-International Society for Optics and Photonics. She served as Co-Chair for the Data Fusion Technical Committee of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) in 2009–2013, and Chair for Remote Sensing and Mapping Technical Committee of International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in 2010-2014. She served as Associate Editor for IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (2011–2015), IEEE Signal Processing Letters (2012–2015), and Journal of Applied Remote Sensing (2014–2015). Currently, Dr. Du is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS). She was the Guest Editor of several special issues published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE JSTARS, Journal of Applied Remote Sensing, Pattern Recognition Letters, and Remote Sensing.
